POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team outscored Vassar College by an 8-3 margin in the second half to pull away with an 18-12 victory in a key Liberty League matchup on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Turf Field.

Senior Grace Heiting had another excellent game for Union (4-6, 3-3 Liberty League), leading all players with four goals and six points while also adding a game-high nine draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Dana Truini added a career-high five points on three goals and two assists, while classmate Drew Charlton matched Heiting with a game-high four goals.

For the second straight game, Union did an excellent job preventing the opposition from transitioning from offense to defense as well, holding Vassar to a 9-of-19 effort on clear attempts and forcing 22 turnovers.

After Heiting scored the first goal of the game 1:54 in, Vassar came back with three in a row to take a 3-1 lead with 10:52 on the clock. But the Dutchwomen closed the quarter strong, getting goals from Charlton, Truini and Heiting to take back the lead at 4-3 after 15 minutes.

The second quarter was a high-scoring frame, with both teams scoring six times in the 15 minutes of action. Charlton started the period with a goal to put Union up by two before a pair of Vassar goals evened the score, and the teams traded tallies before two Maddy Kretten goals gave the Brewers an 8-7 lead with 3:26 left. But, after trading goals, Charlton scored twice in the final 68 seconds to put Union back ahead for good, including the go-ahead tally with two seconds on the clock.

The Dutchwomen took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring the period's first four goals to build up a 14-9 lead. Sophomore Anna Smith bookended the run with goals, while junior Dana Nelson and first-year Greta Maurer also found the net.

The visitors put four more in the back of the net during the fourth frame, helping to fight off any chance of a Vassar comeback. Junior Katie Julien regained the team's five-goal edge early in the frame, and three goals in the final five minutes helped to shut the door, with Nelson, Truini and junior Elena Gerrato helping to seal the win.

Senior Jenna Paszek and sophomore Hannah Dubinsky split time between the pipes on Saturday, with Paszek making two saves in the first half and Dubinsky stopping five shots after halftime. Union finished the day with a 35-22 edge in shots.

Union will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup at Trinity (Conn.) College beginning at 6 p.m.
