Metra’s 147th Street/Sibley Boulevard station in Harvey will close for a year or more beginning next month as it undergoes a revamp.
The station on the Metra Electric line will close May 16 and is expected to remain closed for 12 to 15 months.
The $20 million station revamp includes replacing concrete platforms with a composite material intended to last longer and adding an elevator to make the station accessible to people with disabilities. The station building and passenger shelters will be replaced, and a canopy will be added that will cover much of the platform.
Work will also take place at street level, where a new entrance will be built that includes a covered staircase. Pathways to the main parking lot on the east side of the tracks will be upgraded, and new lighting will be installed on the platform and sidewalk under the tracks. A gravel parking area near the entrance will be paved and converted to a kiss-and-ride, and bicycle parking will be added.
The project, funded by state, federal and Cook County dollars, is the first major upgrade to the station since 1989, according to Metra.
Metra awarded a $13 million contract to IHC Construction Companies, based in Elgin, for the work. The total project, including contingencies, construction management and other costs, is budgeted to be $20 million, Metra said.
“We understand that closing a station for any length of time can be a major inconvenience for our riders; however, the nature of the project won’t allow us to accommodate passengers during construction,” Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski said in a statement.
Metra advised passengers to use the Ivanhoe Station at 144th Street or the Harvey Station at 154th Street while the 147th Street station is closed.
