BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With her third medalist title in five spring events, senior Ashley Lau successfully defended her Indiana Invitational title and guided the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team to the team title after posting an 875 54-hole total today (Sunday, April 10) at the Pfau Course at Indiana University. With the team trophy, U-M recorded its third team victory while etching its sixth top-two finish in nine regular-season events.

Continuing her dominant spring, Lau paced the Maize and Blue recording her third medalist honor over her last five events. She made it five consecutive events leading the Wolverines. Using seven birdies in Saturday's opening round, Lau set her trek to a record-breaking win early carding a 67 (-5) and giving herself a four-shot advantage over the 68-golfer field. Her round made her the only player to break 70 in the first round as she was one of three golfers to break par.

Heading straight into the second 18 of the day, she used four birdies to nullify five bogeys as she posted a second-round 73 (+1). With her 140 (-4) 36-hole total she increased her lead to five shots as day one came to a close.

Opening Sunday's final round by birdieing two of her first three holes, Lau set her pace early. Recovering from back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6, she closed her final 12 holes four-under (four birdies, eight pars) to card 68 (-4) and a 208 (-8) total.

With her fourth career individual title, Lau set a new program record for career wins as she snapped out of a tie with former Wolverines greats Kim Benedict (1999-2002) and Laura Olin (2002-05), who each had three. This weekend her 208 helped her to the Pfau Course women's 54-hole record, a fourth straight sub-par 54-hole total, and an 11 shot victory. Additionally, Lau posted an event-best 17 birdies, seven more than the next golfer.

"This course holds a special place in my heart because it was my first collegiate win last year," said Lau. "I was very excited heading into this tournament. After Augusta (National Women's Amateur), I worked hard on my putting as I wasn't putting well. It paid off this week for sure. However, I must say I'm very proud of this team. It definitely wasn't easy with the cold and wind however we all fought hard and came out with a win. I guess you could say it was a great weekend."

"Ashley's (Lau) performance was simply dominating," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We are all so proud of her and we are witnessing a pretty special season from a world-class player. The conditions were crazy difficult and her combination of great ball striking and putting just obliterated the field. I couldn't be more proud."

Closing the regular season in Big Ten country, the Maize and Blue used Lau's opening 67 (-5) and 74s from juniors Hailey Borja and Mikael Schulz to put up a 292 first-round total on the board and position itself in the lead, just a shot ahead of Wisconsin (293). After the Badgers reversed the first-round tallies, 292 and 293, both conference foes found themselves tied after 36 holes with 585 totals.

Paired with each other on the final day, U-M and Wisconsin maintained the top spot through the first five holes before the Wolverines applied the pressure and pulled away for their third victory. With a 68 (-4) from Lau and a 73 (+1) from senior Sophia Trombetta, the Maize and Blue closed with a 290, while the Badgers tallied a 303 giving the Maize and Blue a 13-shot win at 875.

"The conditions were very tough this weekend, and our team just battled through it," said Dowling. "Cold temps, wind, snow flurries, we had it all. The team had a nice reset after our tournament at Arizona State, and we worked hard on our short games to get prepared for the rest of the season. It's paying off in a big way, and feels great to come away with another very solid team win."

Behind Lau's victory, the Wolverines posted four additional top 20 finishes. Closing with a 74, Borja, who led the field with 41 pars, tied for ninth with a 223 total (74-75-74), while Trombetta's 73 gave her a 12th-place finish at 224 (77-74-73). With 229 tallies, Schulz (74-73-82) and graduate Ashley Kim (81-73-75) tied for 18th. Senior Jacqueline Young rounded out U-M's starting five tying for 46th (241).

With the regular season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to the second season. U-M heads to Pittsburgh, Pa., Friday through Sunday, April 22-24, for the 2022 Big Ten Championships. The three-day, 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Fox Chapel Golf Club.

Last year, the Maize and Blue posted its best finish at the conference championships, tying as the runner-up for just the second time in program history. Along the way, U-M set a program record with its 858 (-6) total after closing with back-to-back Wolverine championship record 284 (-4) team tallies.
