Stamford’s Trinity Catholic High School to close - The Advocate

STAMFORD — Trinity Catholic High School will close and will not be accepting students for the 2020-21 school year, as enrollment and deficit concerns mount.

The private school, which first welcomed students in 1958, has faced dwindling enrollment in recent years and growing deficits, as tuition is unable to cover the operating costs of the school.

On Wednesday night, the board of directors of the school voted to shutter the educational institution for the upcoming school year. That decision was ratified Thursday.

Earlier this month, school officials received word that only 19 freshman students have committed to the school for the 2020-21 school year, well below school expectations.

Projected enrollment for next year is between 100 to 110 students, according to a statement from the school. Enrollment for the 2018-19 school year was 295 students, but that number has continued to decline.

Bishop Frank J. Caggiano made the announcement of the closure to the Trinity Catholic High School community on Thursday.

“I do this out of a deep sense of personal sadness and disappointment, knowing what Trinity Catholic has meant in the lives of many alumni and what it means now to the students who are currently enrolled,” Caggiano said in the statement.

The concern is that with a graduating class of roughly 80 students leaving the school, the freshman class of just 19 students, so far, will be unable to make up for the loss.

Because the school doesn’t have the ability to dip into the city’s taxes, it depends on tuition from parents, which is why enrollment is paramount. Yearly tuition at Trinity is $15,200.

Brian Wallace, director of communications for the Diocese of Bridgeport, said the school would be projected to run a $2.3 million deficit next year with the low enrollment.

In the past, the diocese has had to pick up the cost of operation.

Last year, the school was in danger of closing because of an “alarming” enrollment drop, but a push to increase enrollment kept the institution afloat.
