Advisory commission votes to take down Columbus statue - 10News

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Chula Vista Human Relations Commission voted unanimously to recommend a proposal that includes taking down a statue of Christopher Columbus at Discovery Park.

The vote took place at their Thursday meeting.

The statue has become a beacon of controversy, as groups say it is a reminder of a dark and painful history. Others have advocated strongly to keep the statue where it is.

The recommendation also includes renaming Discovery Park and changing Columbus Day into Indigenous People’s Day in Chula Vista.

The recommendation will go to the Chula Vista city council for discussion.
