KENT, Ohio – Kent State bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Cornell Saturday with an impressive 3-1 victory over Oakland as the Kent State Invitational came to a close Saturday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (4-2) made it tough for opposing hitters to score efficiently and held both teams to a .166 hitting percentage. Senior Gracey Jarecke and freshman Mackenzie McGuire led the way with 30 digs each, and graduate student Alex Haffner was right behind with 29. Graduate student Danie Tyson was active at the net and totaled five blocks.
McGuire also led the attack with 33 kills on the day. Senior Savannah Matthews recorded 20 kills and Tyson added 18 while hitting at a .429 clip. Haffner registered 83 assists and was joined by McGuire on the all-tournament team.
"When we are passing well and have all three hitters as options, it's really hard to defend us," said head coach Haley Eckerman. "Unforced errors is what killed in our first match. Doing a better job of taking care of those points is one of the things we still need to work on, but it's early in the season and gives us time to get better."
Up Next for the Flashes
The Golden Flashes conclude the Kent State Invitational with two matches on Saturday at the M.A.C. Center. Kent State will battle Cornell at 10 a.m. and return to action against Oakland in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
