BOWLING GREEN, Fla.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team finished their second round this morning and carried that momentum in the final 18 to finish eighth at the Streamsong Invitational. The group ended the second 18 with a 276 total before firing 11-under 277 to accumulate an 840 total, the lowest opening score of a season in the last 14 years.
The 840 is the eighth lowest score in school history. By par, 24 under is second only to the 45-under 819 shot at the Aldila Scenic City Invite to begin the 2008 campaign.
It was a very eye-popping scoring performance. With six players in the field, the Mocs scored under par on 14 of 18 cards, was even par on two and over on two others.
Samuel Espinosa fired a closing 66 (-6) to lead the way. He earned a top 10 in his first Chattanooga appearance with a 12-under 204 final tally. It's the lowest opening school in program history and tied for fourth best overall.
Brandon Wear added a 69 to today's total with 71s by the trio of Paul Conroy, John Houk and Alex Cobb. Garrett Engle posted 70 as an individual.
Houk was just four behind Espinosa with 208 (-8). Wear was another four behind him at 212 with Conroy and Cobb following with 218 and 219, respectively. Engle's 6-under 210 was impressive playing on his own six to eight holes away from any teammates.
Virginia (808) captured the team title ahead of Lipscomb (815). The Cavs Ben James won medalist with 20-under 196. The Mocs return to action Sept. 26-27 at the J.T. Poston Invitational in Cashiers, N.C.
