Beloved Italian restaurant to close after 10 years in Wine Country - San Francisco Chronicle

The city of Healdsburg is reeling after Campo Fina, an inviting and casual Italian restaurant with a bocce ball court, announced it’s closing after 10 years. Campo Fina’s last day of service will be Oct. 1.

Known fondly around Healdsburg as “Campo,” the business developed a reputation as a friendly, community-first restaurant that catered to locals while welcoming tourists. The restaurant’s brick-laden back alley near the Healdsburg Plaza was a go-to gathering place for bocce tournaments — one hand used for rolling, another for holding a glass of wine — and hearty meals consisting of wood-fired pizzas, pastas, paninis and classic Italian snacks like olives, arancini and meatballs. Former Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer once called Campo Fina’s pizza “among the best in the Bay Area.

In a goodbye letter penned by owners Ari and Dawnelise Rosen, they reflected on their vision to “serve up food, as delicious as the serious restaurants of the world but in a setting that welcomed locals, our friends, our family and our neighbors.”

“We wanted a place where everyone felt comfortable to dine,” the letter continued.

The Rosens cited a litany of factors that contributed to their decision to close: Their rent, which doubled this year, inflation, and a labor shortage exacerbated by a lack of housing and competition from other employers amid  “rampant growth” in Healdsburg. The city has seen a surge of newcomers in the past few years, like the Montage resort, the Matheson, the revived Madrona and Little Saint

Scopa, the Rosens’ first neighborhood Italian joint, opened in 2008, followed by Campo Fina in 2012. Scopa closed in 2017, as the Rosens reportedly wanted to “simplify their lives” with a single business. Now, that too is gone.

“One of the hardest parts in leaving the restaurant,” the Rosens wrote in the Campo Fina letter, “is closing a place that feels like home to so many.”
