Minnesota dominated offensively early and dialed in a pair of goals at the 30th and 33rd minute from junior midfielder Sophia Boman. Graduate defender Gabbie Cesarone added to the score in the 86th minute, her second goal of the season.
In its first four-game win streak since the 2018 season, Minnesota outscored its final non-conference opponents of the fall 5-0.
"I was proud of our group, they were really strong and played a great first half," said head coach Erin Chastain. "We had some good goals, other good looks, and really controlled the tempo. I felt that we had a bit of a lull in the second half but closed out strong with the goal."
Minnesota jumped away to a quick lead in the first half with a penalty kick goal from Boman. Junior defender Abi Frandsen drew the foul that created the chance for Boman to finish.
Three minutes later, Boman secured the 2-0 advantage over Marquette. On her own, she sent a strike past the goalkeeper's hands to finish the first half ahead.
Marquette tried responding offensively, but only got a pair of shots on frame in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko saved both, notching her third clean sheet of the season.
The Golden Gophers saw six corner kicks in the final six minutes of play. On the third corner, Cesarone scored using her head, thanks to an assist from sophomore forward Khyah Harper.
Minnesota begins Big Ten play on Friday as they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Huskers at 7 p.m. CT under the lights. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
