The worst football statues in the world as we remember the ‘horrifying’ Cristiano Ronaldo bust ridiculed when - talkSPORT.com

On this day, March 29, three years ago, one of the truly great football events took place…

It wasn’t on a pitch, no, it wasn’t even at a stadium; in fact, it occurred at an airport.

The Aeroporto da Madeira to be precise, and the event in question? The unveiling of a bust of the island’s favourite son, Cristiano Ronaldo.

But why, I hear you ask, was this event – a simple statue unveiling – so amazing?

Well as they say, a picture tells a thousand words – so just take a glance below and you’ll find out exactly why this day will go down in football history.

The bust, unveiled at a ceremony in Funchal on March 29, 2017, was designed by sculptor Emanuel Santos, who instantly became the most famous artist in the world – but for all the wrong reasons.

His sculpt was ridiculed around the globe; Santos became the butt of numerous jokes, the bust itself was branded ‘horrifying’ and was said to share a likeness with Bez from Happy Mondays.

Santos eventually created a second bust, unveiled one year later, though it was also derided; The Guardian’s art and design critic Eddy Frankel branded the sculpt dreadful and actually worse than the initial bust.

Ronaldo isn’t the only footballer to be done dirty when it comes to a statue, though.

Ted Bates, the legendary former Southampton player, manager, director and president who served Saints for 66 years, had a statue unveiled outside St Mary’s Stadium in 2007, four years after his death at the age of 85.

Unfortunately the statue, which cost around £112,000, looked hardly like Bates and featured some bizarre proportions with very short arms and legs.

One angry Saints fan even ranted to the BBC about the statue, saying: “It’s an absolute abomination and the worst thing is, it looks more like former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric.”

One year later a new statue was unveiled, which is a far better likeness and remains outside St Mary’s to this day.

Other legendary football figures such as Bobby Robson and Billy McNeill have been honoured with dodgy statues, while the statue of Alan Shearer features the Newcastle hero celebrating a goal with his finger pointing in the air – despite the fact his open palm celebration is one of the most iconic in Premier League history.

A bold design choice, it must be said…
