Should there be a Jason Kelce statue in Philadelphia? Some fans think so. - PennLive

Although Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has not officially announced his retirement, fans are calling for the beloved player to be honored with a statue and a special day.

There are seven petitions on Change.org seeking to get a statue of him at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of him to replace the Columbus statue in Marconi Plaza and two to get June 2 named “Jason Kelce Day.”

There is even one petition seeking to convince Kelce to play one more year with the Eagles.

“Kelce’s potential retirement is personal for us. He has been an integral part of our team and community, embodying what it means to be an Eagle.

“His departure would not only leave a void in our lineup but also in our hearts. We believe that he deserves better than ending his career on such a low note. We are calling upon him to reconsider his decision and play one more year for us - not just for the sake of winning another championship but also as a testament to his resilience and dedication. We understand that this is ultimately his decision and respect whatever choice he makes. However, we want him to know how much he means to us and how much we’d love for him to stay.”

The petition with the largest number of supporters - 110 - calls for the commissioning of a bronze statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

“We are calling for the creation and installation of a bronze statue to honor Eagles’ center, Jason Kelce, for his iconic ‘Hungry Dogs Run Faster’ speech. This impassioned address was delivered on February 8, 2018, following the Eagles’ triumphant win in Super Bowl LII.

“The proposed statue would depict Kelce in his memorable Mummers’ Parade attire and be placed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art - the very location where he gave this historic speech. To maintain symmetry with existing installations, it could be positioned directly opposite to Rocky’s statue at the base of the museum.

“This initiative is not just about commemorating an individual or a team’s victory; it represents one of our city’s proudest moments that resonated with millions across Philadelphia and beyond.

“... The proposed statue will serve as a permanent reminder of our city’s resilience, unity, and unyielding spirit - values embodied by Jason Kelce’s stirring words that day.”

The Jason Kelce Day petitions aim to have the honor on June 2, which represents Kelce’s jersey number - 62.

Kelce, 36, has played for the Eagles for his entire NFL career.

There were reports that after the Eagles’ 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday in the Wild Card round of the playoffs that Kelce told the team he was retiring.

Kelce, however, has not confirmed nor has he denied that. He addressed the speculation on Wednesday on the “New Heights” podcast he does with his brother, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I didn’t announce what I was doing on purpose despite I guess what’s been leaked to the media ... I just don’t think you’re in a position after a game like that to really make that decision. I just don’t. There’s too much emotion in the moment, there’s too much going down in the moment, to really fully grasp that decision. I’m not trying to be dramatic and continue to draw this thing out, I’m really not.

“When it’s time to officially announce what’s happening in the future, it’ll be done at in a way that’s definitive and pays respect to a lot of people and individuals that have meant a lot to me,” Kelce said.

Change.org has created a page where fans can find all of the petitions “to witness the overwhelming support and love for Kelce.”
