Giant balloons, literary statues among highlights of 3 major Hong Kong events - South China Morning Post

Giant heart-shaped balloons, statues of literary characters from the late martial arts writer Louis Cha Leung-yung’s novels and a pop art show are among the highlights of three imminent major events in Hong Kong aimed at boosting the economy.

Adrian Cheng Chi-kong, chairman of the government’s Mega Arts and Cultural Events Committee, on Friday said the three events in the next two months would bring in at least 600,000 tourists.

Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun vowed that the government would take a proactive approach to attract and host world events related to arts and culture, as well as shopping and dining, in Hong Kong.

He said he would set up a cross-departmental unit, which he would chair, to provide support to mega-event organisers to ensure a smooth process when it came to seeking government approval on relevant licences, crowd management and traffic arrangements.

Hong Kong to attract more top acts such as Taylor Swift, Beyoncé: tourism chief

“We will also step up the marketing of mega events in the city so that the public will be aware of them,” he said.

Cheng, also executive chairman of New World Development, said a collaboration between the Hong Kong Design Centre and British fashion designer Anya Hindmarch would feature a 12-metre (39-foot) red heart floating in Statue Square in Central. Another three hearts, each measuring three metres, will soar above Flower Market in Mong Kok, Lam Tsuen in Tai Po and Kennedy Town on Valentine’s Day on February 14.

He said the event could bring in 100,000 tourists and a number of residents would be drawn to the event to take selfies.

Happy New Year? Not for Hong Kong restaurants feeling pinch with fewer tourists

Between March 15 and July 2, Cheng said a show of works of the centenary memorial of Louis Cha, also known as Jin Yong, was expected to entice 460,000 tourists with martial arts figures of the writer’s fictional characters.

A global pop culture festival, ComplexCon’s Asia, is due to debut in Hong Kong in March and expected to attract 30,000 guests from all over the region.

“We aim to cultivate the cultural landscape in Hong Kong through these events,” Cheng said.

The announcement follows Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s pledge to try to bring superstars such as Taylor Swift to the city in an effort to reboot the sluggish economy.

Several international celebrities skipped Hong Kong in their Asia tours. For example, Swift will only stop by Japan and Singapore for her 2024 tour, while British rock band Coldplay will perform in Singapore and Thailand.

Hong Kong welcomed 34 million tourists last year, 65 per cent of the pre-Covid level in 2019.
