Could a 300-foot statue be coming to The Point in Draper? - KUTV 2News

The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority has taken the first step toward the possible construction of a “Statue of Responsibility” on the site of the old Utah state prison.

During a meeting Tuesday, The Point’s board unanimously approved moving ahead with a project review to evaluate constructing the 300-foot statue in Draper as part of a massive development plan for the 600-acre state-owned site.

The vote followed an impassioned speech from Gov. Spencer Cox who said he learned about the statue years ago and wants it built in Utah.

“We used to be a nation of builders and architects, and now we’re a nation of arsonists. We tear apart, we destroy, we tear down, and there’s so little left to inspire us,” said Cox. “I believe Utah is still a state of architects, a state of builders. I still believe that we believe in big things – things that outlive us, things that are bigger than us, things that matter more than just the moment – and I wanted something that would represent that, and this is that.”

The “Statue of Responsibility” was conceived by Holocaust survivor and philosopher Viktor Frankl as a west coast supplement to the east coast’s Statue of Liberty. Steve Cohen, CEO of The Statue of Responsibility Foundation, told The Point board that efforts to build the statue in California have gone nowhere, so they’re now looking at Utah.

Cohen said his group has a plan to raise the money to build it.

“It costs you nothing,” Cohen told the board, “but to give your spirit to it.”

The statue’s design depicts two hands grasping each other. Gary Lee Price, the sculptor and creator, explained its meaning.

“We’re all one. We’re all united,” he said. “Sometimes we’re the hand reaching up, and sometimes we’re the hand reaching down.”

Gov. Cox urged The Point’s board – which is made up of elected officials and other appointees – to embrace the statue.

“You have, I think, a unique opportunity – singular in the history of our great state – to do something big, to do something monumental, literally, to change the face of this place and the world forever,” the governor said. “I hope that we will take that opportunity.”

The board ultimately voted unanimously to undertake an initial evaluation of the project.

“I love everything about the project,” said Rep. Jordan Teuscher (R-South Jordan), board co-chair, prior to the vote. “I think that this is exactly what we need in our country today. It embodies the history of our state, the culture of our state, and really what has made Utah the great place that it is today.”

It's unclear exactly where in The Point development the statue would be built if it's eventually approved. Meanwhile, phase one of the development – which will feature housing, retail, trails, and a central park – is set to get underway soon.
