Ithaca, NY – Receiving possibly its best two pitching performances of the season, the Clarkson University Baseball team was unable to come away with a win at Ithaca College, as the Bombers also delivered two gems as the home team won both contests on Saturday, 5-3 and 4-1, at Freeman Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-16 overall and 5-9 in the Liberty League and Ithaca improved to 24-10 and 12-4. The two teams will close out the three game set on Sunday with a single nine-inning game.

In the first game, the two teams exchanged zeroes for the five innings as Kyle Locklear and Kyle Lambert cruised along for the first half of the game. The Knights broke through with one in the top of the sixth as Mike Nee reached on a lead-off single and then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Nee finished the circuit on two wild pitches, putting Clarkson up 1-0. Ithaca responded with three in the bottom half of the frame, the first coming around on a Matt Fabian sacrifice fly. David Cifonelli later drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run, while an infield single from Collin Feeney gave the Bombers a 3-1 advantage through six frames.

Clarkson tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to back-to-back run-scoring singles from Colby Brouillette and Mike Nee, but Ithaca was able to score an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning and then picked up another run in the bottom of the eighth on a run-scoring ground out by Collin Feeney.

Locklear tossed 5.1 innings and gave up four hits with five walks while striking out six, and Griffin Tubbs took the loss, giving up just a single earned run in last 2.2 innings. Kyle Lambert threw the first six innings for Ithaca, giving up just two hits but walking four and striking out five. It was Garrett Bell who would earn the win in relief, striking out three and giving up two earned runs in three innings of work. Offensively, Mike Nee was 2-for-3 with two walks, a run, and an RBI for Clarkson, while Buzz Shirley went 2-for-3 for the Bombers.

Game two saw the teams combine for just 13 hits, and seven of those came in the innings where all of the runs were scored. Clarkson picked up one in the top of the first as Caleb Doyle led off with a double and later scored on a Colby Brouillette single. Ithaca was held without a run until the fourth, but the Bombers pushed four across in the inning thanks to five straight hits. Gil Merod plated two with a single, Riley Brawdy sent another one in thanks to an infield single, and Feeney drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Nicholas Hofacker took the loss for the Knights, giving up eight hits over six innings of work, and Nate Scott gained the win, scattering five hits with one walk and one strikeout in seven innings. Kent Wilson was 3-for-3 at the dish for the Knights, and Connor Pedersen was 2-for-3 for Ithaca.
