Creighton saw its season end at 31-18 overall, while Xavier moved to 33-26. Xavier moves on to face Connecticut on Sunday, May 29. The Musketeers would need to win twice on Sunday to earn the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Coming off a 16-8 win over Georgetown in the first game on Saturday, Xavier's offense remained red hot. The Musketeers struck for two runs in the top of the first inning as Jack Housinger hit a solo home run to right, then Tyler DeMartino smacked a two-out triple and Andrew Walker delivered an RBI single to left-center.
Creighton answered with a run in its half of the first as junior Andrew Meggs delivered a leadoff single, moved to third on a pair of productive outs and junior Sterling Hayes laced an RBI single to left.
Xavier took control of the contest in the top of the third, plating eight runs on eight hits. Luke Franzoni provided a solo blast to start the frame and belted a grand slam home run as well in the inning. DeMartino connected for a long ball as well as Xavier claimed a 10-1 edge.
Creighton tallied its second run of the ballgame in the fourth as freshman Nolan Sailors blasted a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jared Wegner.
Sophomore Alan Roden extended his reached base streak to 33 games with an RBI single in the sixth, while the Bluejays plated three runs without a hit in the eighth. Roden also delivered a two-run double with two down in the ninth to bring the final score to 27-8.
Xavier continued to add runs as the game progressed, tacking on three runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, five more in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth. The Musketeers finished the game with seven home runs, three by Franzoni.
Bluejay starter Dominic Cancellieri took the loss (5-3), allowing two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings, while Xavier starter Lane Flamm picked up the win (2-4). Flamm held Creighton to three runs in five innings, allowing seven hits.
