HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to close out Spring Break on Wednesday morning, falling to George Fox University by a 5-4 score at Chaplin Community Park.
Three different singles matches went to supertiebreakers on the day, with the Bruins squeaking out two of the three by slim 10-8 margins to escape with the victory.
Junior Marilena Karadimou was the lone double winner on the day for Union (3-4), winning her second singles and first doubles matches. Karadimou and sophomore Gracie Nicol came back from 4-1 down to defeat Danielle Brown and Olivia Morris at first doubles, 8-6, but the Bruins took the other two points to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Decisive wins by Karadimou at second singles (6-2, 6-3) and junior Hallie Katzman at sixth singles (6-1, 6-4) helped knot the score at three with three singles matches remaining. Sophomore Kate Hirnak battled through her sixth-singles matchup with Emily McDonald to temporarily put Union ahead, winning 6-1, 1-6, 10-8. However, the other two supertiebreakers did not go Union's way, as first-year Gabby Gatto came up just short in a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 third-singles battle and Nicol fell by the same supertiebreaker score to Brown at the top flight, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8.
The Dutchwomen will return north and, after a little time off, will get back into Liberty League play at Ithaca College on April 3 at 2 p.m.
