Bayonne will shut down its COVID-19 testing and vaccination operations, according to Mayor James Davis.
“Our positivity rates in Bayonne have been rapidly decreasing,” Davis said in the weekly COVID-19 video update. “As most COVID restrictions are shedding away, I’m happy to announce that Bayonne will be paring back on some of its COVID initiatives.”
COVID-19 Testing offered by the city at the Bayonne Community Museum at 229 Broadway is coming to an end on March 17.
People can still can get a PCR test at the location until then on Tuesdays from 1 to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Go to www.solvhealth/book-online/0rwaOA.com for an appointment.
According to Davis, there are a number of other locations in Bayonne that provide testing. He said he has directed the Health Department and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management to post available testing sites in Bayonne.
As of March 10, there were two patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Bayonne Medical Center. The positivity rate for the first week of March at the Bayonne Community Museum site was zero percent, or zero out of 23 tests coming back positive. This is the second week in a row featuring such numbers after the surge during late January and early February, with the last week of February also touting a zero percent positivity rate according to OEM, with 0 out of 13 tests coming back positive.
Vaccination site shuttering
On March 31, the city is ending the vaccination site at Korpi Ice Rink behind Bayonne High School at 669 Avenue A. People can still get tested before then on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Moderna vaccines are given on Wednesday and Pfizer on Thursday. Call 201-537-4818 for an appointment.
“After 14 months of providing vaccinations for the community, the time has come to end our program,” Davis said. “Anyone needing a COVID vaccine after this date can take advantage of the numerous other outlets such as pharmacies and doctors offices to receive your shot.”
According to Davis, the decision came after a discussion with the city’s COVID-19 Task Force. He previously said during his March 3 video update that he would be contemplating closing the sites as they have seen a week over week decline.
“These decisions were made after I consulted with numerous partners within the COVID-19 Task Force to ensure that we have the ability to stand back up should the need arise.
According to Davis, the Task Force can quickly pivot to the needs of the community if the demand again arises for vaccinations and or testing. He also thanked residents for their cooperation.
“Let’s all pray that the worst is behind us and that we can move our way back to normal for good,” Davis said.
The move follows a slow wind down of the city’s COVID-19 response in February, including the relaxation of mask mandates at City Hall, the shuttering of the rapid COVID-19 testing sites, and the scaling back the number of days at the testing and vaccine sites. Bayonne is on a path back to normal, but Davis said the city can quickly revert back to its COVID-19 response if necessary.
