The threat of severe weather and flash flooding remains a distinct possibility as a low-pressure system makes its way to Southwest Louisiana early Tuesday morning.
“We’ll start looking for the severe weather to arrive while most people are asleep in the early morning hours on Tuesday,” said Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office.
Jones said an area of low pressure moving across west Texas on Monday is expected to produce widespread showers and thunderstorms starting at about 11 p.m. tonight. Some of these storms will have the potential to be severe with tornadoes, damaging wind and hail.
Wind speeds in excess of 60 mph or higher are possible, he said.
“It’s a slow-moving system, which is why we will also be looking at the threat of flash flooding into Tuesday — up to five inches or more in some locations,” he said. “We’ll also have to worry about high winds and large hail.”
Due to the weather threat, Calcasieu, Allen, Beauregard, Jeff Davis and Vernon public schools will be closed on Tuesday. The McNeese State University campus will also be closed Tuesday morning, however labs and classes scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and later will be held as scheduled. Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School and all Calcasieu Parish Public libraries will also be closed.
Gov. John Bel Edwards has also canceled a planned visit to Lake Charles to discuss insurance reform because of the anticipated weather.
Jones said the severe weather threat will develop Monday night as a warm weather system moves into the area, setting up all the needed pieces for the storms. A cold front is expected to follow the severe weather’s arrival.
Two to three inches of rain is expected, with much of it falling in two hours or less. Expect to see street flooding during periods of heavy rain, Jones said.
