Two Matches, Two Close Wins for Women's Tennis - Union College Athletics

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College women's tennis team earned a pair of hard-fought victories on Tuesday at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club, knocking off Augustana College, 6-3, and Allegheny College, 5-4, to improve to .500 on the season.
 
First-year Gabby Gatto led the way for Union (3-3) with four victories on the day, winning both of her singles and doubles matches, while sophomore Gracie Nicol won both of her singles matches and split two doubles contests for a three-win day.  
 
Union 6, Augustana 3
 
Gatto got her good day started by teaming with classmate Paige Tromblee for an 8-6 third-doubles win over Michaela Magee and Mia Reese, followed by Nicol and junior Marilena Karadimou posting an 8-4 win at first doubles over Caitlyn Hanulikova and Lily Schoeck.
 
Taking a lead into singles play, Union won four of the individual matches to secure the victory. Gatto moved the Dutchwomen another point closer with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hanulikova at third singles, as did Nicol when she came back from a set down to outlast Schoeck in a supertiebreaker, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Sophomore Kate Hirnak clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Grace Rider at fifth singles, and junior Hallie Katzman capped the win by knocking off Reese, 6-1, 6-2, at sixth singles.
 
Union 5, Allegheny 4
 
The final match of the day was a tough battle, but Union pulled out two of the three doubles matches and three of the six singles contests to complete their sweep with a 5-4 win.
 
Gatto and Tromblee again got Union off on the right foot with an 8-3 win at third doubles, while Hallie Katzman and Rayna Katzman ensured Union had the edge headed into singles with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) victory over Katherine Marks and Katherine Stancil at second doubles.
 
The Dutchwomen then secured the victory by winning three of the first four singles contests. Nicol earned her second singles win of the day with a pair of 6-2 sets at first singles, and Gatto moved Union to the brink of victory with a 6-0, 6-2 third-singles win. Karadimou clinched the win in impressive fashion, coming back from a set down to defeat Ella Swan, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4, in a second-singles supertiebreaker.
 
Union will close out their Spring Break trip tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. match against George Fox University.
