A bronze memorial statue now stands in front of the Braintree police headquarters in honor of K9 Kitt. The police K9 was ambushed and killed in the line of duty back in 2021, just a few months before he was set to retire.Kitt, his handler, Officer William Cushing, and another officer, Matthew Donohue, were ambushed while searching for a suspect near the Braintree Village Apartments. And in truth, he inspired me to do the same. He took his training and work with an unusual ease, as if it was a singular purpose in life to protect and support the good while hunting the bad."Five kids from Braintree came up with the idea to create the statue in Kitt's honor, raising more than $24,000 to make it happen. The department also unveiled the rededication of the Braintree Police Officers Memorial.Cushing established the K9 Kitt Foundation following the death of his partner. The non-profit foundation raising money to support other K9 handlers across the country that have been violently wounded in the line of duty.
