ASHEVILLE - Months after debuting a new dining concept in West Asheville, a local restaurant group has decided to close one of its downtown eateries.

On Nov. 22, Buxton Hall Barbecue at 32 Banks Ave. will close permanently.

In 2015, Buxton Hall, which specializes in Carolina-style barbecue, opened as a partnership between Pitmaster Elliott Moss and Chai Pani Restaurant Group co-founder and chef Meherwan Irani.

“We are so proud of Buxton's 8 year run. We hope the community comes out to support our Buxton team and local producers in this last month of service,” said a statement provided by the Asheville-based company and supplied by publicist Jordan Culberson on Oct. 19.

Chai Pani Restaurant Group is comprised of James Beard Award-winning Chai Pani, Buxton Chicken Palace, Spicewalla spice company, and its Indian grill street food restaurant, Botiwalla, which expanded with its first Asheville location that opened in August.

Buxton Chicken Palace, a counter service eatery known for its chicken sandwiches, is a separate entity from Buxton Hall BBQ and will remain open at S&W Market, a food hall at 56 Patton Ave.

The restaurant group has properties in Asheville and Charlotte and in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia.

Buxton Hall has had its ups and downs over the years, including being recognized as a “Best New Restaurant” by Bon Appétit magazine in 2016.

In 2022, Moss dissolved the partnership, selling his shares of the business and later introducing two new restaurant concepts in West Asheville.

“Buxton Hall has helped to revitalize Carolina barbecue, paying respects to hallowed traditions, while adding its own innovative approach, a process rooted in a respect for the barbecue craft and for people,” the company statement read.

According to the company, what will happen next at the Banks Avenue venue is undecided, but more news will be shared about the restaurant group’s future in the coming months.

“We are rallying behind our team during this incredibly hard time to support them through financial and employment resources,” the statement read.
