11,000-year-old statue of man clutching penis excavated - Times of India

In a groundbreaking archaeological discovery, a team of researchers in Turkey has uncovered a set of remarkable statues, dating back nearly 11,000 years, which are challenging our understanding of pre-agricultural communities in the region, reported Live Science. The findings include a life-sized sculpture of a man, holding his penis; and a stunning representation of a wild boar, providing insight into the culture and practices of this ancient society.
The two statues were found at the neighboring sites of Gobekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe, which are among the world's oldest known temple complexes. Gobekli Tepe, renowned for its megalithic T-shaped pillars and intricate sculptures, is believed to have been utilized for funerary rituals. The site, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), challenges previous notions about the complexity of prehistoric societies.
The wild boar sculpture, carved from limestone, was discovered at Gobekli Tepe and dates to a period between 8700 B.C. and 8200 B.C. Measuring 4.4 feet in length and 2.3 feet in height, the sculpture boasts remnants of red, black, and white pigments on its surface, suggesting it was once painted. This artistic detail adds a layer of sophistication to the people inhabiting the area during this era.
At Karahan Tepe, approximately 22 miles away from Gobekli Tepe, researchers found a life-sized sculpture of a man standing over 7 feet tall. The statue's striking features, with pronounced ribs, spines, and shoulders, have led experts to speculate that the figure may represent an important ancestor associated with the building where it was uncovered. The unique pose, where the man is clutching his penis, has given rise to interpretations that this figure may symbolize the progenitor of a social group, such as a lineage or clan linked to the structure.
Ted Banning, an anthropology professor at the University of Toronto who was not directly involved in the excavations, noted that while any interpretation of the statues remains conjectural, the discoveries at Karahan Tepe are particularly intriguing. Banning speculates that these structures may have served as homes rather than temples, further supporting the theory that each building had its own lineage ancestor.
The purpose of these ancient sculptures remains a subject of debate, and researchers are eagerly examining the new finds to unravel more about the society that created them. These latest revelations from Gobekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe continue to reshape our understanding of the complexity and organization of pre-agricultural communities in the region.
