A statue of River Plate legend Marcelo Gallardo went viral on social media, but not in the way the intended.

The 26ft statue of Gallardo was erected outside their stadium and shows the Argentine with the Copa Libertadores trophy.

He was manager of River Plate from 2014 to 2022, winning the Primera Division in 2021.

Gallardo also won the Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent to the Champions League, in 2015 and 2018.

And he etched his name into club legend by beating rivals Boca Juniors in that second final.

As a player, he won six league titles for River Plate between 1993 and 2003.

Now he has been honoured by the club, but the main thing anyone notices is the huge bulge in the statue's crotch.

Pictures of the statue quickly went viral with fans mocking it.

One wrote: "Nothing quite like erecting a statue."

Another added: "The new golden balls?"

Another comment said: "Gallardo definitely deserves a statue. Not sure what is going on with that bulge though."

Addressing the comments about the statue, sculptor Mercedes Savall said: "This is [soccer], fans always ask the players and the manager to 'put a lot of eggs [effort] into it' and it was like a subliminal message through the sculpture."

Gallardo is said to have no complaints, though, as Savall added: "Luckily, he didn't ask for explanations about the statue, he let me work in peace."
