Forsyth Park confederate monument defaced with pro-Palestinian messages - WJCL News Savannah

Forsyth Park's statue, memorializing Savannah's Confederate dead, was defaced early Sunday morning with pro-Palestinian messages. Each of the four sides of the monument featured spray-painted messages like "Free Gaza," "Free Palestine," and "No Christmas in Bethlehem" written in red ink. Savannah police say it happened shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, but wasn't discovered for 11 hours until the afternoon. SPD says they've already filed a 311 request to remove the messages. It's unclear, however, when the removal work will be done considering City of Savannah staff are off Monday for the holiday. The statue, according to a city webpage, was erected by the Savannah Ladies Memorial Association in 1875 to honor Savannah men who died fighting for the South in the Civil War. The memorial originally featured two statues but was changed in 1879 when officials enclosed the middle section and installed a Confederate soldier featured on the top. Savannah police says when they catch the suspect, they'll be facing vandalism charges. Those could rise to felony charges depending on the monetary amount of damage done, according to a department spokesperson.
