A local San Francisco gem is closing soon. Viking’s Giant Submarines, a staple of the Glen Park neighborhood, is shuttering because owners Betty and Steven Chang are retiring. The last day of operations is set for March 17.

“It’s been wonderful serving you and the community for the last 18 years,” read a note on the store window, which was reposted by the Glen Park Merchants Association Instagram account. “We look forward to retirement and the next chapter of our lives.”

SFGATE confirmed the closure over the phone with Steven Chang.

The neighborhood sandwich shop, which city records show opened in 2006, was known for toasted sandwiches such as the Viking Combo (pastrami, salami and ham), banh mis and teriyaki chicken subs. Located at 2906 Diamond St., across the street from the Glen Park BART station, the mom-and-pop shop also served burgers, fries and some Vietnamese side dishes, such as spring rolls.

The sign on the window at Viking’s said that “new ownership and an exciting new restaurant” will replace the storefront soon. Chang declined to give any further details as to what is coming next.

There was also a Viking’s Giant Submarines at 1300 Ocean Ave. in San Francisco, near City College of San Francisco. However, the two shops were not related, Chang said. According to records, the Ocean Avenue location closed in 2017. Currently, a Go Go 7, which serves Korean cuisine and barbecue, sits at 1300 Ocean Ave.
