San Antonio's Lenin statue vandalized by reported explosion - mySA

UPDATE: Surveillance footage from a security camera shows a person leave some kind of explosive underneath the Vladimir Lenin sculpture that then explodes into a plume of white smoke on Monday, November 7. The footage was posted online by Texas Public Radio on Monday afternoon after reports surfaced that the art installation of the Russian revolutionary was vandalized by an explosion.

In the video, a person in a light-colored, long-sleeve T-shirt and dark pants can be seen approaching the statue on the property neighboring the TPR headquarters at 321 W Commerce St. around 3 a.m. on Monday. The person hesitates when what looks like a security light turns on, but then continues to place something under the sculpture.

The person casually walks away and seconds later an explosive is seen going off, creating a plume of white smoke. The footage ends shortly after but the damage done to the sculpture is not visible. TPR does not own the neighboring property that is used as an art space called La Zona. No one was injured in the explosion nor was TPR property damaged.

San Antonio arson investigators are looking into incident.

Original story continues below.

Witnesses in the area reported an explosion and smoke on Monday morning, November 7, at the site of the downtown art installation of a chrome head of Vladimir Lenin next to Texas Public Radio headquarters at 321 W Commerce St. San Antonio Fire Department arson investigators are now looking into the apparent vandalizing of the sculpture, TPR reports

A tweet from TPR reporter Paul Flahive says "bomb went off outside our offices early this morning," but it's unclear what device, if any, was used to damage the sculpture. Joe Arrington, SAFD spokesperson, says the incident is being investigated as criminal mischief but gave no other information. Arrington did confirm that there were no injuries.

TPR says it had no comment since it was on private property and none of TPR's property received damage.

The property, called La Zona, is a community art space that features revolving art pieces and is owned by local developer James Lifshutz. Centro San Antonio and its vice president of cultural place making Andi Rodriguez worked with Lifshutz to help bring the piece to La Zona in March. It's appearance was the talk of the town that month. MySA reached out to Lifshutz for comment.

"We're saddened by any natural or unnatural damage to public art and communal space and cultural assets. But, we just don't know what happened yet and we're waiting to hear back," said Liz Burt with Centro SA.

The Lenin sculpture is a traveling installation from international artists called the Gao Brothers called Miss Mao Trying to Poise Herself at the Top of Lenin’s Head.  It depicts a critical, caricature of Mao Zedong, Chinese communist revolutionary and founder of the People's Republic of China, with a tiny body and big head balancing atop the Russian and Socialist revolutionary's head.

A guide to the art piece says that the Gao Brothers have chosen to " play the role critic to the political environment of their homeland."
