Hampton, Va. – The No. 18/21 Elon University football team closed the 2022 regular season with three consecutive wins, capping the strong finish with a 38-24 win over Hampton Saturday on the road. The Phoenix improve to 8-3 on the season and finish CAA Football play with a record 6-2.
 
Elon has a bye week as the rest of the country plays in week 12 and the Phoenix will await a possible FCS playoff bid. The selection show takes place Sunday, Nov. 20 at 12:30 p.m. on ESPNU. Elon also has the opportunity of hosting a first-round playoff game, which will take place Saturday, Nov. 26.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon scored touchdowns on its first three drives of the game, but Hampton attempted to keep pace with two touchdowns and a field goal.
  • Jalen Hampton scored rushing touchdowns on each of Elon's first two drives and Matthew McKay added a three-yard scoring pass to Johncarlos Miller II on the next possession.
  • Elon led 21-17 at the half before the Phoenix defense came up big. Omar Rogers had interceptions on the first two Hampton possessions of the second half and the Phoenix took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter. McKay found Jackson Parham for a nine-yard TD and Skyler Davis made a 26-yard field goal to build the lead.
  • Hampton got back within a score late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown, but Jalen Hampton iced the game with a 49-yard run and then he scored from eight yards out for his third touchdown of the ball game.
 
 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Jalen Hampton finished with 24 carries for 177 yards. That total gives him 1,023 rushing yards on the year, the most since John Taylor had 1,069 in 2004.
  • Elon's eight wins and conference wins ties for the most in the program since 2017.
  • Elon improved to 3-3 away from home in 2022 to go with a perfect 5-0 home record.
  • This was the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
  • Elon gave up its first second-half touchdown in a win this year. Over the course of its eight wins, the Phoenix has given up only 16 second-half points.
  • Elon ran for 120 or more yards for the 10th time in 11 games this year.
  • Matthew McKay was 16-of-19 passing for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Jackson Parham had a team-high five catches and added 55 yards. Chandler Brayboy led the team with 60 yards receiving.
  • Jeff Yurk averaged 47.0 yards on three punts.
  • Among Omar Rogers' two interceptions was a 71-yard return to the Hampton 12-yard line.
