North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn has described how attempts to prevent him from running for office again for allegedly inciting the January 6 riot are "very close" to succeeding.
Speaking to Fox News' Tucker Carlson, Cawthorn denounced the legal challenge being brought against him by a group of North Carolina voters who hope to bar him from being on the ballot in November's midterms.
The Free Speech for People group cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which states that a person who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" after taking a Congressional oath should be prevented from running again in their challenge.
The group claims that Cawthorn's speech at the January 6 protest in Washington D.C. amounted to promoting an insurrection.
Speaking to Carlson, Cawthorn admitted that the attempt to prevent him from running for office is close to being successful.
"They are actually very close," Cawthorn said. "Now what's going on in North Carolina is that the State Board of election, a panel of five people, is asserting that they have the ability to bar 740,000-plus Americans in my district from being able to elect me, to send me to Washington to be their weapon to fight against the deep state."
Cawthorn also suggested that his critics are attempting to claim January 6 was an insurrection to justify using a section of the 14th Amendment, which was brought in after the Civil War, in order to improve Democrats' chances in the midterms.
"What's going on here is that they are actually very close to being able to subvert the will of over 700,000 Americans," Cawthorn said.
"And make no mistake, this is not just about a 26-year-old from western North Carolina in a wheelchair, this is about the future of our very nation.
"If they're able to set this precedent in North Carolina, they will be able to keep anybody who had valid and legitimate concerns about what happened in the 2020 election from being able to ever hold office and thus ending the America First movement."
During his speech on the morning of the January 6 riot, Cawthorn told the crowd of Donald Trump supporters that they still had "some fight in it."
He said: "The Democrats, with all the fraud they have done in this election, the Republicans, hiding and not fighting, they are trying to silence your voice. Make no mistake about it, they do not want you to be heard."
The freshman congressman, who is running in North Carolina's 13th District after the state approved a new map, has also frequently supported Trump's false claims that the 2020 Election was rigged against him.
