ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Netminder Strauss Mann put on a solid performance and senior Jack Becker scored the lone goal for the University of Michigan ice hockey team as they played to a 1-1 draw with Arizona State on Saturday night (Feb. 27) inside Yost Ice Arena.
The first period featured constant back-and-forth action as the teams were flying from the drop of the puck. Each side threatened at times, especially on the man-advantage, but neither cracked the score sheet in the opening period.
After 20 minutes of play, U-M was outshooting the Sun Devils, 13-3. The Wolverines went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the visitors were 0-for-1.
The teams resumed their search for the first goal of the game in the second period, but nothing materialized until late in the frame. Arizona State (6-15-3) broke the ice with 1:04 remaining when a Sun Devil skater's redirection from the netfront area was enough to sneak the puck past Mann and claim a 1-0 lead.
Following the ASU goal, it took just 23 seconds for the Wolverines to find the equalizer. Becker skated right to the front of the net, while Jimmy Lambert and Nick Granowicz battled with Sun Devils behind the ASU net. Granowicz extracted the puck from the scrum along the boards before finding Becker in the slot. The captain wasted no time in burying the puck to get Michigan (13-8-1) on the board to tie the game at 1. Granowicz and Lambert collected assists on the senior's third goal of the season.
With two periods in the books and the game tied at 1, Michigan held a 24-10 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wolverines put up 17 shots in dominating fashion throughout the final frame but could not garner a go-ahead goal before the final buzzer sounded. After 60 minutes, U-M led in shots (41-12) and faceoffs (34-22), but the game headed to overtime.
The three-on-three overtime session began with possession going to ASU, who held the puck for over a minute before U-M had a chance of its own. Just before the midpoint of the extra stanza, Nick Blankenburg made a gorgeous dash to the net after securing a takeaway in the neutral zone. He pulled the puck to his backhand as he drove toward the crease before being taken down to the ice by a defender. There was no penalty call as play carried on.
With less than 20 seconds remaining, Eric Ciccolini had a beautiful backhand shot pushed out of play. That whistle, with 16.7 seconds remaining, was the first and only stoppage of the overtime frame. Shortly thereafter, the final buzzer sounded on Michigan's first draw of the season. The final shot count was 42-13 in Michigan's favor.
Michigan's four seniors -- Becker, Luke Morgan, Michael Pastujov and Dakota Raabe -- were honored after the game.
Becker, co-captain for the 2020-21 Wolverines out of Dellwood, Minn., has notched 25 goals and 24 assists for 49 points in 119 games played for Michigan. The captain, an exceptional student in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, has taken 260 career shots.
Morgan, a Brighton, Mich., native who transferred in from Lake Superior State and collected two assists in Friday night's (Feb. 26) 4-1 win, tallied 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points in 130 games played for the Lakers and Wolverines.
The ceremony marked the second straight Senior Night with a Pastujov being honored after Michael's brother, Nick, graduated last year. The younger Pastujov, from Bradenton, Fla., played a major role for the Wolverines this season, leading the team in goals for the majority of the season while playing in a top-six role and acting as a mentor for his young linemates. "Pasta" scored 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points in his 102 games. His +22 career rating paces the class of 2021.
Raabe, a native of Capistrano Beach, Calif., has consistently provided speed for the program while being a reliable penalty killer. Raabe's energy helped him fit in on any forward line; in his 110-game career with U-M, he scored 11 goals and notched 21 assists for 32 total points while boasting a +15 rating.
The Wolverines will hit the road to Minneapolis on Friday and Saturday (March 5-6) to end the regular season with a two-game set at Minnesota.
