ROUND ROCK, Texas – Brett Squires drove in three runs and the pitching combination of Jake Bennett, Carson Carter and Jason Ruffcorn allowed no earned runs as the Oklahoma baseball team defeated Baylor 9-3 Sunday evening to close out the Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond.

The Sooners (4-3) scored six runs over the first three innings on their way to season highs of nine runs and 13 hits. OU added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Bears (2-4) scored two runs in the first inning and one in the sixth.

Bennett (1-0) went 5.0 innings in his second start of the season, scattering seven hits and a walk, and allowing two unearned runs (both in the first inning) with two strikeouts. Carter pitched a career-high 3.0 frames, tying his career best with four strikeouts. He allowed an unearned run on just two hits with a walk. Ruffcorn closed out the game in the ninth inning.

"Jake settled in and made some pitches when he had to. He got some big double plays, and so did Carson," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "I thought that was a separator. We played offense a lot better today than we did yesterday, and even the day before. Brett picked us up when he had to pick us up and had three RBIs. It was really big."

Squires, starting at third base for the first time this season, went 3 for 5 with three RBIs. He plated a run in the first inning with his first hit of the season – a double – and singled in a run in the third and another in the sixth inning. Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza, making his 200th career start, knocked a two-run single as part of OU's four-run third inning.

Four other Sooners finished with two hits: Muniz (also scored twice), right fielder Kendall Pettis (drove in a run and scored once), center fielder Tanner Tredaway and first baseman Tyler Hardman.

Oklahoma started quickly, scoring in its initial at bat for the first time this season, when left fielder Diego Muniz lined a base hit to right field and Squires dropped a double in between fielders in left. In the third, Squires and Pettis laced RBI singles and Zaragoza drove a two-run base hit to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Sooners tacked on a run in the fifth inning on a base hit by designated hitter Jimmy Crooks, then added two more in the sixth on a single by Squires and a sacrifice fly by catcher Justin Mitchell.

All three Baylor runs were unearned. After an error extended the first inning, left fielder Kyle Nevin singled in a run, and second baseman Jack Pineda's groundout scored a run to tie the game, 2-2. First baseman Chase Wehsener singled with two outs in the sixth and scored on a dropped fly ball to make it 9-3, Sooners.

Oklahoma will play at the Frisco Classic next weekend, March 4-7, at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. The Sooners will face Arizona at 2 p.m. Thursday and noon Friday, Missouri at 7 p.m. Saturday and Dallas Baptist at 6 p.m. Sunday.
