Park statue honors state’s CCC workers from Great Depression - New Haven Register

KILLINGWORTH - A statue honoring Connecticut’s Civilian Conservation Corps workers was dedicated at Chatfield Hollow State Park on Saturday.

Among those in attendance were two survivors of the CCC - Harold Oehler, 102, and Mike Caruso, 96.

Before it was a state park, Chatfield Hollow was known Camp Roosevelt, the first CCC camp in Connecticut. In 1934, the Civilian Conservation Corps built an earth and stone dam across the brook, creating seven- acre Schreeder Pond, that is still open for swimming. Pines planted at the same time now form a green setting around the pond. In 1949 Chatfield Hollow was designated as a state park.

The CCC was a Great Depression-era employment program established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The program used unemployed men to work on natural resource conservation projects. It ran for nine years from 1933 to 1942, when the United States needed more men for World War II.

The CCC also helped respond to natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, blizzards, and hurricanes, including the hurricane that hit Connecticut in 1938.

In Connecticut, there were 21 camps. Each camp had approximately 250 men who served for six-month hitches with the option to re-up for additional terms. Thus, at a minimum more than 5,000 men served. But this figure is probably very conservative because on average the camps were open for slightly over five years so the 250 slots probably turned over several times. A more realistic estimate may be closer to 15,000 men, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Among the CCC camps in Connecticut were Camp Hook at Squantz Pond in New Fairfield, Danbury’s Wooster Mountain, Camp Tourney at the Mohawk State Forest in Cornwall and Camp Roberts at Black Rock State Park in Thomaston.

The the 6-foot statue at Chatfield Hollow was made possible through $24,000 in donations.

The concept of the CCC Worker Statue program was developed by former Chapter #129 of Grayling, Michigan in 1995. Program coordinator. To date, members and their supporters have purchased 74 life size statues across America.
