Ask LaFleur: What happened to statue of young girl in Rock Quarry Garden in Greenville? - Greenville News

Question: There used to be a statue of a young girl and a dog in Rock Quarry Garden. It’s now gone. What happened?

Answer: The statue, which can usually be found near the bottom of the stairs at the Sherwood Street entrance to the park, was recently removed, but it should be back soon.

According to Mary Steinbach, director of City of Greenville Parks and Recreation, the statue was removed so it could be bronzed.

The statue, known as "Monelle and Perky" was previously only painted bronze and, according to astute park visitors, the paint was chipping.

"Monelle and Perky" depicts a young girl sitting on a bench reading a book to her dog, Perky.

The statue is included on the city of Greenville's public art tour.

According to the art tour website, the statue was commissioned by Cathy Santa Ronald as a memorial to her mother, Monelle Stedman Riley. Ronald donated the statue to the city of Greenville.

Rock Quarry Garden, located near Sherwood Street and McDaniel Avenue, is one of several public gardens located in the city limits.

It is the site of a pre-Civil War granite quarry, according to the city.

Today, the garden boasts a small waterfall, along with several flower beds and lots of open green space.
