A tour guide and local activist raised concerns about plans to erect a statue of slave owner Richard Montgomery, the city's namesake.
Michelle Browder, of More Than Tours, spoke Tuesday at the Montgomery City Council meeting to decry a recently announced plan to build a statue and park centered around the Revolutionary War figure for the state's bicentennial celebration.
"The new statue of Richard Montgomery is a black eye on the city," she said.

The majority of Montgomery residents are black, yet their voices are ignored, Browder said during her 3-minute speaking time at the end of the council meeting. There are plenty of figures that could have been honored, she said, including black and Native American leaders.
When the city announced plans for the statue, leaders also said that they would be building a statue of civil rights icon Rosa Parks. Her statue, however, was a recent addition to the bicentennial park plan centered on Montgomery.
"For us to do this when the world is coming here to be cleansed and have a truthful conversation, it's very appalling," she said.
