Duke of Gloucester visits Sikh soldier statue
The Duke of Gloucester has visited a statue in a West Yorkshire park which commemorates those Sikhs who fought and died in World War One and Two.
The 6ft (1.8m) Sikh soldier memorial is made from Indian bronze and stands on a plinth of Yorkshire stone in Greenhead park, in Huddersfield.
It was erected in 2019 after 10 years of planning, and is the only statue of its kind in the North of England.
The duke met members of the Sikh Soldier Organisation at the park during his visit.
"It's a great pleasure to meet all of you who have celebrated your culture by installing this statue to remember those Sikhs who fought for us in the two world wars," the duke told them.
He added: "Here is a bit of history, and I think we all need a bit of history from time to time.
"I am delighted that so many of you feel great pride in having it here. "
More than 83,000 Sikhs were killed and many more wounded during World War One and World War Two, according to data collected by the Sikh Soldier Organisation.
Chairman, Kalvinder Singh Bullar, said about 20 people from his village in India had been drafted to serve in the war, but their part in British history had been largely forgotten.
He told the duke standing the statue on a plinth made of Yorkshire stone "felt like a fitting thing to do".
"It's quarried stone from Yorkshire, and we got the sculpture from India because that's where all the soldiers came from."
