Court reinstates case surrounding Christopher Columbus statue in Schenley Park

YEARS. YEAH. SHANNON, SINCE 2020, WHEN THEN MAYOR BILL PEDUTO ORDERED THIS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STATUE HERE IN SCHENLEY PARK DOWN. NOW, THE ITALIAN SONS AND DAUGHTERS TOOK THE CITY TO COURT, WHERE A JUDGE DISMISSED THEIR CASE. BUT IT HAS NOW BEEN REINSTATED. AND NOW THE BATTLE OVER WHAT WILL BE FOR THIS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STATUE CONTINUES. HISTORY SHOULD BE REALLY SAVED AND EXPOSED. AND YOU KNOW, THE IMAGE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS HERE IN THE PARK BRINGS STRONG OPINIONS. I THINK WE HAVE TO MAKE THAT DECISION, YOU KNOW, WHETHER WE SHOULD VISIT THE PLACE OR NOT. AND FROM WHAT WE FOUND, UNDERSTANDING, I’M NOT A FAN OF CHRISTOPHER, BUT I DON’T WANT TO STEP ON ANYBODY ELSE’S RIGHTS EITHER. YOU KNOW? BUT THAT’S LIFE. IF I COULD, HE’D COME DOWN IN THE COURTROOM. THIS HAS BEEN A FIERCE BATTLE FOR YEARS. IN 2020, THEN MAYOR BILL PEDUTO CALLED FOR THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STATUES REMOVAL. THE ITALIAN SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA FILED SUIT TO STOP IT. ALONG THE WAY, A JUDGE DISMISSED THEIR SUIT. BUT FRIDAY, THE COURT RULED THAT WAS AN ERROR IN THE CASE CAN MOVE FORWARD. WE’RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE THE RULING. I SPOKE WITH THE ISDA PRESIDENT FROM ITALY ABOUT THAT UNANIMOUS DECISION. THE COURT, UM, MADE IT CLEAR THAT THERE WERE, UM, THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ARBITRARY ACTION THAT FORMER MAYOR PEDUTO TOOK WHEN WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE STATUE FROM SCHENLEY PARK WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE LAW. THE FIGHT, THOUGH, IS NOW IN THE HANDS OF NEW CITY LEADERSHIP. SO WE ASKED MAYOR ED GAINEY WHETHER HE PLANS TO PUSH FORWARD IN THE FIGHT TO REMOVE THE STATUE. MY TEAM WILL TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND AS ALWAYS, WE WILL COME BACK TO YOU AND LET YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO. BUT, YOU KNOW, LIKE, I KNOW I’M NOT GOING TO MAKE A DECISION UNTIL WE HAVE A CONVERSATION TO FIND OUT WHAT’S THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CITY. ONCE WE HAVE THAT ANSWER, THEN I WILL COME BACK AND LET YOU KNOW. THIS STATUE HAD BEEN COVERED WHILE THE CASE MOVED THROUGH THE COURTS. BUT TODAY, AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS NOT. HOWEVER, THE MAYOR TELLS ME THAT WASN’T A DECISION. IT WAS ACTUALLY DUE TO THE WEATHER. SO AT THIS POINT IT IS UNCLEAR WHETHER THE STATUE WILL REMAIN HERE AS IT IS, OR WHETHER THE CITY PLANS TO CONTINUE THIS FIGHT ONCE THE MAYOR MAKES THE DECISION, WE’LL PASS THAT ALONG TO

Court reinstates case surrounding Christopher Columbus statue in Schenley Park

A court has reinstated the lawsuit filed to keep the Christopher Columbus statue in Schenley Park. In 2020, then-Mayor Bill Peduto called for the statue's removal. Italian Sons and Daughters of America filed suit. The case was dismissed, but on Friday, a judge ruled in favor of ISDA and allowed the case to move forward."Christopher Columbus is very symbolic of all of the sacrifices and contributions that Italian-Americans have made, both to the city of Pittsburgh, to the state of Pennsylvania, and to our country," said ISDA President Basil Russo. "We want that part of our history respected and preserved, just as we respect the history of every other group and the contributions that they have made to this country."Pittsburgh Action New 4 asked current Mayor Ed Gainey if he plans to continue the court fight to have the statue removed, as his predecessor wanted."We'll be talking about that this week, and we'll have some answers for you next week. I'm not going to be premature to speak about it right now," Gainey said. "I'll sit down with my team and discover exactly what we want to do and how we're going to do it. So that is something that is still coming. We just got the decision, we're massaging the decision. We will meet with that. We will meet with the correct personnel and come up with an answer that best benefits the city."The statue had been covered in plastic while the case moved through the courts, but as of Monday, it is not. However, Gainey said that wasn't a decision made by anyone but rather was due to the weather. It remains unclear whether the statue will remain as it is or whether the city will continue to fight to have this statue removed.
