Drainage work will close a section of Route 981 in Mt. Pleasant Township beginning Thursday, according to PennDOT.
In Fairfield Township, work on a cross pipe is slated to close a portion of Route 271 starting Tuesday.
The Route 981 closure will go into effect at noon, between Mt. Pleasant and Kecksburg roads. It’s expected to continue into October as crews from contractor Walsh Construction Company install drainage.
A detour will be in place, using both Mt. Pleasant and Kecksburg roads.
The drainage work is part of the $55.2 million Laurel Valley Transportation Improvement Project.
The first phase, at the southern end of the project, involves reconstructing Route 981 from Route 819 north to a point just south of the village of Calumet. It is expected to be completed by September 2024.
The rest of the project will extend Route 981 improvements farther north to Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity and will include some new alignments and intersection modifications.
The closure in Fairfield will affect a stretch of Route 271 (Menoher Highway) between Old Route 271 and Turkey Inn Road. It’s expected to begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday, continuing through early October.
A lengthy posted detour will redirect motorists along routes 271, 711, 56 and 403, through portions of Westmoreland, Cambria, and Somerset counties.
