Call it Lady Liberty’s spa day.
Volunteers took boats to the middle of the Susquehanna River on Saturday for a periodic clean up of the iconic replica of the Statue of Liberty, which has stood atop an old bridge abutment for decades.
Workers were tasked with spiffing her up with a fresh coat of white paint and stripping away poison ivy and grape vines enveloping the statue. The statue was also inspected for cracks.
It’s an ordeal for workers to reach Lady Liberty; first navigating through the rocky and fast-moving river, then using ladders to reach the top of the 32-foot high bridge pier it sits on, before climbing more ladders to reach the crown of the 25-foot statue.
Gene Stilp, the builder of the two statues that have stood on the site, said Lady Liberty got a new accessory with the latest clean up.
“Since Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts soon we will be adding the pink sash to Lady Liberty to make folks aware that the fight to make all folks free from breast cancer is an ongoing effort,” he said.
The first Lady Liberty was erected for July 4, 1986 to honor the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. It was supposed to be taken down by Labor Day 1986 but was so popular, Stilp said, he decided to leave it in place.
The Harrisburg area has embraced the quirky landmark, visible to those traveling on Rt. 322 north of the Capital City every since.
The current statue was placed atop the pier by helicopter in 1997.
