HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 22, 2022)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team dropped a pair of hard-fought matches to No. 6 New York University and Stockton University Saturday to wrap up a five team, seven-match invitational held at Canavan Arena.

In the opener, junior Elle Maggio set down a career high 16 kills and classmate Liz Patterson added 11, but the Ducks fell to the nationally-ranked Violets in four sets (19-25, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25).

In the final match of the day, sophomore Parker Adkins matched a season high with 14 kills and junior Meg Dion totaled six blocks, but the Ducks fell to Stockton University in five sets (24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 10-15). The pair of setbacks left Stevens with an 18-9 record on the year, although the Ducks are a perfect 6-0 in MAC Freedom play.

Haley Holz had 11 kills and six aces and Leela Anvekar had five blocks and a pair of aces for NYU, who ended the day 21-4. The Violets also swept Kean to push their winning streak to nine. Stevens has won three of the last five meetings between the Hudson River rivals.

Kate Louer had a team-high 13 kills and Teleyah Witherspoon had 10 kills and six blocks for Stockton, who fell to No. 16 Wesleyan earlier in the day to close play 17-8, The Ospreys' five-set win over Stevens snapped Stockton's two-game losing streak. Stevens and Stockton have alternated wins over the last three meetings.

Stevens was able to stay close in the opening set with the Violets, drawing even with the guests on an attack error. The Violets responded with three straight points to jump in front for good.

The second set saw NYU open a 10-point lead at 20-10 and appeared to be in control of the frame. However, the resilient Ducks went on a 6-0 run that was punctuated by a pair of kills from Patterson and four errors from NYU. Stevens pulled within three after a kill from sophomore Cleo Shannon, but that would be as close as the Ducks would get as a kill from Anvekar and an attack error gave NYU a 2-0 lead in the match.

Stevens found itself down by as many as six points in the third set only to rebound with a 5-0 run to take the lead at 12-11 following a Shannon kill. The Ducks maintained their lead after an ace from senior Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar and an attack error and closed out the frame on an emphatic kill from Patterson.

The final set saw NYU record the first five points of the frame only to see the Ducks claw all the way back into the frame at 23-22 on a Shannon kill off an over pass. However, Holz knocked down a pass from NYU libero Lindsey Hirano to pull NYU to match point and a Holz ace gave the win to NYU.

Against Stockton, the Ducks spotted the Ospreys a two sets to none lead, before coming to life in the third srt. Stockton scored two of the first three points of the frame to threaten to sweep the Ducks, but Stevens answered with six unanswered points - three of which came courtesy of aces from sophomore Bailey Axelrad

Axelrad's third set of the stretch pushed the Ducks' advantage to 9-6 and Stevens would go on to close out the set on a kill by first-year Vivian Lisboa.

The Ducks evened the match by coming out ahead in the spirited fourth set. The teams combined for 10 ties and four lead changes in the set, with Stevens finally closing out the frame on a Patterson kill that took place following a Stockton misplay.

The final set saw Stockton take a 7-2 lead and a double block by Witherspon and Camille De La Torre ended the match.
