patunganaja.blogspot.com
FARMVILLE, VA. – The Longwood Lancers field hockey team fell to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks by a score of 2-1 at home. Kate Frey evened up the match headed into halftime, but the only and game-winning goal in the second half belonged to Lehigh.

Goals (Assists)

8' Lehigh: Maddie Kandra (Abbie Brown)
24' Longwood: Kate Frey
40' Lehigh: MJ Schwab (Kiki Mes)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood (3-11) was threatening early and often to begin the match, registering six shots (five on goal) in the frame. Lehigh (9-6) goalkeeper Maddie Kahn kept the Mountain Hawks alive, stopping each shot to keep the Lancers off the board. Maddie Kandra converted on Lehigh's only shot attempt in the first quarter to give them a 1-0 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Lancers would again be the more aggressive team in the second quarter, out-shooting the Mountain Hawks three to one. Longwood finally got one to go late in the first half when Kate Frey found the back of the net on a deflection for her first goal of the 2022 campaign.

With the score tied heading into the second half, Lehigh came out of the gates hot in the third quarter. The Mountain Hawks sent six shots (three on goal) at Lara Van Nunen in the frame, one of which crossed the plane off of the stick of MJ Schwab to put Lehigh up 2-1. Despite both teams recording two shot attempts in the fourth quarter, neither side pushed one past their opposing goalkeeper and Lehigh would hold on to win 2-1.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We pressed well to come up with the ball," said head coach Miranda Rigg on the team's early offensive success. "We valued possession in transition, going around them instead of through."

"Value each opportunity," Rigg said of the team's close loss to a solid opponent. "Finish when we have chances and clean up our play when we are down."

"We have another good opponent coming to town and an opportunity to keep improving," Rigg said of the team's upcoming MAC bout against Kent State.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Today's match marks the 3rd all-time matchup between the Lancers and Mountain Hawks, with Lehigh leading the series 3-0.

Longwood registered 11 shots (eight on goal) to Lehigh's 10 (six on goal).

For Kate Frey, her second quarter score was her first goal of the season.
