Dr. Emma Savage-Davis, dean of the College of Education, Leadership Studies, and Counseling, will be part of a multiyear research initiative alongside teacher educators from across the nation and beyond.
The Association of Teacher Educators’ Inquiry Initiative will launch at its summer conference next week. There, association members and external professionals will group off and meet several times to carve out areas of research to focus on through 2024.
Savage-Davis, who’s been a member of the ATE since 1993 and served as president from 2014-15, said she’s pleased to see it return to its roots through the initiative — a think tank of scholars helping to shape the field of education. Specifically, this new initiative will focus on closing “opportunity gaps” and sources of societal inequality that bleed into education.
“That has been my interest for a long time and my work for a long time, in preparing teachers for that kind of space,” she said.
She added this will be a prime opportunity to work with a group of professionals from across the country and internationally to focus on a specific research topic. Having relayed her interests to ATE when registering for the initiative, she expects to be grouped with five to eight other people with similar passions.
After the summer conference, Savage-Davis said the groups’ methodology-based work will continue independently and collaboratively around those subtopics, and they’ll meet again several times at each biannual ATE meeting.
Ultimately, participants will likely publish their research as scholarly articles or perhaps in a book, she said. And that work will hopefully continue and evolve even past the three years the initiative is slated for.
“This whole process is going to set the tone for the future of ATE because we’re hoping…this will add to the wealth of literature that’s out there and the action that is out there,” she said.
Such contributions, Savage-Davis said, should be poised to act as agents of change to help ensure equitable and accessible education into the future.
