Historic Abraham Lincoln statue restored, given new location in Jackson library - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI - A historic statuette of President Abraham Lincoln has been restored and relocated in a Jackson library.

The 39-inch-tall bronze statuette on a heavy walnut base traces its roots to Chicago, New York and Jackson at the turn of the 20th century. It now can be seen in the front lobby of the Jackson District Library’s Carnegie Branch, 244 W. Michigan Ave., after having been relocated from the library’s second floor.

“We always loved this work of art at the library, and after a recent report on its provenance was completed, we thought restoring this piece and moving it to a more prominent location was appropriate,” JDL Director Sara Tackett said.

The statuette is a copy of American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 12-foot statue of Lincoln titled “Abraham Lincoln: The Man,” which was dedicated in Chicago’s Lincoln Park in 1887, JDL officials said.

The statuette was likely cast by Tiffany Studios in New York, and created posthumously by Saint-Gaudens’ widow, Augusta, officials said. It was paid for by $1,400 raised in 1904 during the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Republican Party on July 6, 1854, in Jackson.

Library officials worked with Rives Junction-based B&C Woodworks to restore the statuette’s walnut base. Owner Brian Cox, said he was thrilled to be a part of the project.

“It was a privilege to work with the library on the restoration of a piece of history,” Cox said. “Due to the condition of the pedestal, we had to partially remove the finish and stain-match to the original color before re-applying the original shellac finish to restore the pedestal back to what it would have looked like a century ago.”
