BOISE, Idaho – Four players scored in double figures in Boise State's 72-68 loss to New Mexico at ExtraMile Arena, Friday.
Dominique Leonidas led all scorers with 21 points. Mary Kary Naro added a dozen while Rachel Bowers and Anna Ostlie chipped in 11 points each. Bowers's point total was a season high and she added a season-high 10 points for her third-career double-double.
"We missed shots on four-consecutive possessions late and you cannot do that in close games," Boise State Head Coach Gordy Presnell said. "I'm proud of our crowd (season-high attendance of 603). We are still young, but we have to turn around and go to Laramie (Wyoming) next week."
The Broncos (4-9, 0-2 Mountain West) led 19-16 after one quarter and 36-35 at the half. It appeared to be a bigger advantage at intermission as Naro's 3-pointer from near half court was called good on the floor, but overturned on replay review at the end of the first half.
New Mexico (10-4, 1-0) began the second half on an 8-0 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 43-36 with 7:22 left in the third quarter. Leonidas scored 11 of the Broncos' 19 points in the period, including a baseline jumper at the buzzer to put Boise State on top 55-54 heading into the fourth quarter.
There were three lead changes and three ties in the final 10 minutes. Leonidas scored in the paint to knot the score at 68 with 2:58 remaining. Neither team made a field goal the rest of the Way (Boise State was 0-for-5) and New Mexico converted 4 of 6 from the foul line to pull out the victory.
The Broncos were dominating on the glass as they outrebounded the Lobos 50-23. Boise State committed 21 turnovers while New Mexico committed just six and the Lobos owned a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
Next up for Boise State, now 0-5 in games decided by four points or less this season, is a 6:30 p.m. game at Wyoming, Monday.
