Readers respond: How about no human statues? - OregonLive

I am all in favor of removing the statues of Confederate generals and other absolute scoundrels. But if we cannot return the statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to their homes in the South Park Blocks (“Will they return? Toppled Portland statues of Lincoln, Roosevelt mired in delays, uncertainty and suspicion,” Oct. 21), I have a modest proposal: In Portland, we agree that no human is good enough to be remembered with a statue.

Lincoln and Roosevelt are routinely recognized as among the country’s best presidents, men who did and stood for good things. But some have pointed out that they weren’t perfect. If that’s our new standard, we need to remove every Portland statue that depicts a human and vow to install only abstract sculptures, and perhaps statues of well-behaved wildlife.

It is deeply disturbing that the some of our leaders have endorsed the vetting of statues by masked mobs wielding blow torches and chains, and not by the voters and taxpayers of Portland. Lincoln and Roosevelt deserve to be restored to their homes. If we want to honor new heroes, let’s do that, but let’s not tear down our old heroes. Speaking of well-behaved wildlife, what about the elk and the David P. Thompson Fountain on which he stood? What did the elk do wrong? The Thompson Fountain should be restored and the elk returned to its perch.
