Bison Soccer To Close 2021 Season At Western Illinois and St. Thomas - NDSU - NDSU Bison Athletics

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State soccer will close out the Summit League campaign this week with trips to Illinois and Minnesota, as the Bison wrap up the regular season and 2021 with matches against Western Illinois and new Summit League member St. Thomas.
 
The Bison will head to Macomb on Friday to take on the Leathernecks in an afternoon matchup, as North Dakota State looks to extend its winning run against Western Illinois and snap a four-game losing skid in the process. The Bison and Leathernecks are slated for a 3 p.m. kickoff at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
 
NDSU will then head north to Minnesota and the twin cities, as the Bison close out the 2021 year against the newest member of the Summit League, St. Thomas in what will be the first-ever meeting against the Tommies. St. Thomas is currently transitioning from NCAA D3 to D1.
 
Season Finale
With last week's losses and other results around the Summit League, the Bison have been eliminated from Summit League Tournament contention, bringing a close to the season Sunday in St. Paul.
 
Algera, Dew Top 10 In All-Time Games Played for Bison
Seniors Danielle Algera and Brookelyn Dew are the active leaders for NDSU in games played (78). The duo currently sit in a tie for 10th overall at NDSU for games played in a career and could climb to sixth on the list, should they appear in both games this week.
 
Algera is also just one start away from cracking the top 10 in career starts at NDSU, as she enters the week sitting at 71. If the Winnipeg native starts both games, she will end her career with 73, tied for fifth all-time. Algera also surpassed 6,000 career minutes played in the Summit League opener against Oral Roberts. Algera is the is the active leader in minutes played with 6,187.
 
Dew, who has 51 career starts, is second on the active list for minutes played and starts. The Fargo native sits at 4,516 minutes played for her career.
 
Stuber Continues Return to Form for the Bison
During the South Dakota road trip, Dani Stuber made her return from a long injury recovery with her first minutes this season. After missing all of last season, Stuber came off the bench in both games, making her first appearance since starting all 18 games in the 2019 season.
 
The Woodbury, Minnesota native continued her development and return to pre-injury performance levels this past weekend, hitting another milestone as she started both games for NDSU at outside back. Stuber logged over 35 minutes in both games and recorded a shot on goal against Omaha. She has played 113 minutes this season.
 
Bison Quick Strikes
- Senior defender Ellie Schneider leads the Bison in minutes played this season, playing 1,252 of 1,295 minutes. Schneider has played nearly every minute this season before missing a majority of the first half against Denver with an injury. She returned to play the full 45 minutes in the second half.
- Fellow center back Kaitlyn Hanson is the only other Bison over 1,000 minutes (1,190). The duo are also the only Bison to start every game. Schneider has started 42 straight games.
- Six different Bison have scored this season. Olivia Lovick is the only Bison with multiple goals on the year, scoring both of her goals in a 3-2 win over Oral Roberts.
- Olivia Lovick, Danielle Algera and Ellie Schneider are the only active Bison to score against Western Illinois. Algera scored against the Leathernecks in 2019, while Lovick scored twice and Schneider scored once last season.
- All seven newcomers (6 freshman, 1 transfer) have played and started at least two games this season. Payton Jo Armijo and Gabby Sangillo have played in all 14 games.
 
About Western Illinois
Western Illinois, who enters the matchup with NDSU at 9-6-1 on the season, picked up two victories last week with a 1-0 win at Kansas City and a 2-1 win at Oral Roberts. Prior to the pair of victories, the Leathernecks had lost three straight in Summit League play and four of five overall. After being outscored 9-0 in the first two games of the season, Western Illinois recorded six-straight wins and seven games total unbeaten to end non-conference play with a 6-2-1 record.
 
Western Illinois is averaging 1.44 goals per game, led by Amy Andrews who has scored 10 of the Leathernecks' 22 goals on the season. Jenna Lundgren and Bridget Schuler each have four goals, the only other WIU players with multiple goals. Defensively, Isabel Navas Rodriguez has started all 16 games this season and holds a 1.57 goals against average. She has made 72 saves for a .742 save percentage.
 
The Series with Western Illinois
The Bison have been very successful again the Leathernecks, holding a 12-5-1 record all-time in the series, dating back to the first meeting in 2004 when the Bison made the transition to Division I. Since the teams became Summit League foes in 2007, NDSU is 12-4-0 against Western Illinois.
 
NDSU will carry a seven-game win streak over the Leathernecks into Friday afternoon's contest and the Bison are averaging 1.71 goals per game during the streak with six shutouts.
 
The Bison have won 12 of the last 14 overall, including the last three trips to Macomb. However, two of the last three meetings at Western Illinois were decided in overtime. North Dakota State holds a 5-3-1 record all-time against the Leathernecks in Macomb.
 
About St. Thomas
St. Thomas, who are in their first year transitioning to Division I and the Summit League from Division III, are 3-11- on the season, including a 1-6-0 mark in league play. After starting their first year in Division I with a win and a tie, the Tommies have recorded just two wins the rest of the way, a 3-0 victory over Wyoming in non-league action and a 1-0 win over Western Illinois in mid-October.
 
The Tommies have just 12 goals on the season, averaging .8 per game, while allowing 1.6 per game. Lexi Huber and Abby Brantner are the only players for St. Thomas with multiple goals, scoring four and two, respectively. On the defensive side, goalkeeper Olivia Graupmann has played every minute between the sticks, sporting a 1.55 goals against average and a .747 save percentage.
 
Bison Soccer in the Twin Cities
The Bison will take on the Tommies for the first time in program history on Sunday when the two teams meet in the Twin Cities. It will be the 10th time that NDSU soccer has played in Minneapolis or St. Paul, with the other nine meetings all coming in the D1 era and held at the University of Minnesota.
 
The Bison are 1-7-1 all time in the Twin Cities with a neutral-site victory over Belmont in an early season tournament being the only win. NDSU last played in the NCAA Tournament in St. Paul, tying with Texas A&M 1-1 before failing to advance on penalty kicks, 3-4.
 
On This Day
October 29 - The Bison will play for the sixth time on the 29th and the fourth time in the Summit League. NDSU is 3-2 all-time on the date, with two of the program's biggest win in history. The Bison scored the second most goals in school history in 2006, as two players scored hat tricks in a 12-0 win over Howard in New Jersey. NDSU also defeated Centenary 9-0 in Summit league play in 2010.
 
October 31 - Halloween has been good to the Bison in recent years, as NDSU has won three straight on the final day of October. NDSU is 4-2 overall, with three of the four wins coming as shutouts. In the two most recent outings on Halloween, the Bison picked up 1-0 victories over Oral Roberts and North Dakota in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
 
On the Horizon
The Bison will head into the offseason following Sunday's matchup with St. Thomas. The next big date on the calendar for Bison Soccer will be national signing day on November 10, which opens up the national signing period.
