Construction on one of the city’s planned parks is set to begin this week, City Manager Meg Kelsey announced at the LaGrange City Council’s work session Tuesday afternoon.
The park, temporarily named “McGregor Park” until it is officially named, would be located on city-owned property off Hamilton Road, bordered by Brown Street, Colquitt Street and McGregor Street.
Council approved buying a parcel of land at 517 Hamilton Road for $25,000 across from the future construction site at its regular meeting Tuesday.
Kelsey presented a 2-D art rendition of what the future park will look like and what amenities it would include.
Under the plan, it would have an open lawn in the center. The lawn would be surrounded by several covered benches and a path around the lawn. A playground would be located east of the lawn, equipped with swings and exercise equipment as well grill pits and a large pavilion that could be used for outdoor events, Kelsey said. A parking lot would be adjacent to the park.
A portion of the Thread walking trail will also extend into the area.
Currently behind the planned park is the Childcare Network, a building housing head start services. This building will be torn down when construction of the park begins, Kelsey said.
The park currently does not have plans for a bathroom facility. Council Member Nathan Gaskin inquired if the headstart building could be utilized as a bathroom facility for the park, to which Kelsey said it could not due to state guidelines.
Kelsey said building a bathroom at the park could be problematic, noting issues currently ongoing at Southbend Park.
“We’ve had a lot of issues [with] people sleeping in there, vandalizing it, cutting [security] wires,” Kelsey said.
The McGregor Park project, estimated to be around $1.3 million is being funded by SPLOST funding.
