After qualifying for the quarterfinal round of the women's 1,500-meter on Thursday night with a 4:19.18 time, Richards punched her ticket to the national championships in June with a personal-best 4:14.00 mark to finish seventh overall.
"Kaley ran another outstanding race. She races with poise and always seems to make the correct tactical decision," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "Of course, her last 200 was the fastest in the field as it always seems to be."
In addition to the middle-distance event, Richards capped her weekend with the semifinal round of the 5,000-meter, running to a 16:45.25 finishing time.
"To qualify for all three NCAA Championships in a short year is just an unreal accomplishment," remarked Gardner.
In her first-ever postseason appearance, Giesing ran an impressive 2:06.42 time in the highly competitive 800-meter quarterfinal field, missing the qualifying mark by just over three seconds.
"Izzy put herself in the perfect position to qualify. I wouldn't have her do anything different than what she did," commented Gardner. "It just happened to be the fastest 800-meter field in NCAA history. It took 2:02.81 to make it to Eugene, which is absurd."
Richards looks to close out the season in Eugene, Ore. at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, June 9-12.
