The Miami football program will face a transition at quarterback in the 2022 offseason. Second-year QB Tyler Van Dyke and 2021 signee Jake Garcia provided a glimpse of the future for the Hurricanes signal callers this spring with starter D’Eriq King recovering from a torn ACL suffered in December.
Miami also returns third-year QB Peyton Matocha and walk-on Ryan Rizk in 2021. Four-star QB Jacurri Brown is committed to Miami for 2022. Expect Garcia and Van Dyke to compete again during 2022 spring practice and the following August training camp to become the first-team QB.
Throughout college football, QBs transferring have become more prevalent in recent seasons. Four former Miami QBs have transferred since 2017. Jack Allison, a 2016 signee transferred to West Virginia in 2017. Tate Martell, N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams have all left the Miami football program in the last 16 months.
Williams left Miami in January 2020 and is now at South Florida. Martell opted out of the 2020 season and has not yet found a new destination. Perry announced in April he is transferring to Florida Atlantic to play for former Florida State head coach Willie Taggart. Miami is likely to lose a QB other than King in the 2022 offseason.
Which if any of the QBs on the Miami football roster choose to transfer could depend on a few factors. Those factors are different for each player. Quarterbacks have to be more patient than other positions. Backup QBs might get into a game in certain situations. Run-pass options have changed how teams use QBs.
Most teams primarily still use one QB. If a starter is not an adept dual-threat QB, teams might bring in a backup in a short-yardage situation. Garcia and Van Dyke are considering pro-style QBs who have the ability to run. Neither Garcia nor Van Dyke will put pressure on a defense that King will.
Matocha is on the Miami football roster to add depth. Brown is the prototypical dual-threat QB. The question about Brown, Garcia, Matocha and Van Dyke is how patient will they be waiting for their turn to be the Miami QB. Matocha seems the most likely to transfer during the 2022 offseason.
There has been no information or reports that Matocha wants to leave Miami. If Matocha wants to play, moving on from Miami seems the most likely way for that to happen. Whoever does not become the first team QB for Miami in 2022, could have a decision to make about their future.
Would Garcia or Van Dyke consider transferring during the spring or August of 2022? it seems possible. It’s likely that Garcia and Van Dyke are focusing on the 2021 season, becoming the primary backup to King and not thinking about what will be 10 to 11 months from now.
If Matocha does decide to transfer after the 2021 season, Miami would have to sign another QB other than Brown in their 2022 class or add someone who could come in and compete with Garcia and Van Dyke to be the starter with the willingness to remain on the Hurricanes roster and be a backup if they didn’t earn first-team QB.
