Portland’s ‘Umbrella Man’ statue vandalized; umbrella removed for repairs - OregonLive

With December on our doorstep, the man depicted in Portland’s famed “Umbrella Man” statue is without his signature canopy.

An unknown person or people vandalized the statue — a Pioneer Courthouse Square staple called “Allow Me” — in late October by bending the shaft of the statue’s umbrella, according to a Regional Arts & Culture Council spokeswoman.

Spokeswoman Heather Nelson Kent said Monday that the umbrella was removed for repairs, which will include making it more sturdy and adding a more secure attachment at the umbrella’s second anchor point, where its canopy touches the back of the man’s head.

She said it’s unknown who bent the umbrella shaft — or why. There’s no indication the vandalism was linked to protests.

“This is not the first time the umbrella has been damaged and repaired, but all in all, this well-loved sculpture has worn and endured very well since it was installed in the square in 1984,” she said.

The “Umbrella Man,” clad in his business suit and red tie, won’t have his umbrella back until 2021.
