This is the second game in two days for both teams who went on their respective scoring runs, Missouri State's comeback efforts in the third quarter outscored the Terps 23-9 giving the Lady Bears the edge late.
"We weren't able to get stops on the defensive end and then we were really impatient on the offensive end," head coach Brenda Frese said. "Until that rhythm and that flow can come together, it's going to take time with so many new pieces and young pieces in the lineup that we've just got to be able to build that on both ends of the floor."
Senior Katie Benzan led the Terrapins with 16 points and three assists, shooting .570 from the three-point arc (4-7). Freshman Angel Reese contributed 15 points and nine rebounds in addition to her three assists and blocks. Sophomore Ashley Owusu added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Maryland started strong taking a comfortable 24-14 lead into the second quarter where the Terps outscored their opponent 16-6 in the final six minutes of the half. Benzan nailed two 3-pointers followed by a Reese buzzer-beater to head into the locker room leading 43-32.
Missouri State entered the second half on an 18-2 run, cutting the Maryland lead to just 45-41. The Lady Bears outscored the Terrapins 23-9 in the third.
Maryland's comeback efforts led by Benzan came late in the fourth quarter. Benzan and fellow senior Channise Lewis fired back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game and take the lead at 62-61 with 6:45 to play. Missouri State reclaimed the lead and finished the fourth quarter shooting 66.7 percent from the field shooting (8-12).
The Lady Bears, led by senior Brice Calip with a career-high 26 points, shot 10-14 from the free-throw line and 50 percent from the three-point line (2-4)
The Terrapins return to action tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. ET to face the No. 14 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (3-0). This final game of the #BeachBubble Tournament will be streamed on FloHoops.com.
