A Look at Western Carolina...
Western Carolina dropped a 70-59 decision on the road at UNC Asheville Wednesday to open the 2020-21 campaign.  The Catamounts were paced by Nadia Marshall (14 points) and Kyla Allison (12 points).
WCU is coming off a 5-25 season in 2019-20 under the direction of Kiley Hill.

The Series with Western Carolina...
Duke and Western Carolina will meet for the eighth time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 4-3.  The two teams have met only once over the last 26 years with the Blue Devils winning the last four meetings.
In the last meeting, Duke won by a score of 84-47, on Dec. 29, 2015 in Durham.  The Blue Devils are 4-1 in games at home in the series.

Duke Versus the Southern Conference...
Duke owns a 25-5 record against Southern Conference opponents – East Tennessee State (5-0), Furman (4-0), Samford (1-0), UNC Greensboro (11-2) and Western Carolina (4-3). The Blue Devils have won 25 straight contests against the Southern Conference.

Last Meeting...
On Dec. 29, 2015, Duke collected an 84-47 victory over the Catamounts in Cameron Indoor Stadium.  Azura Stevens led Duke with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Oderah Chidom and Rebecca Greenwell added 13 points each.
The Blue Devils held WCU to only 20.6 percent shooting in the contest.

Three Keys...
    1)  Duke is riding a 61-game win streak against non-conference opponents from the state of North Carolina.  The Blue Devils have also collected 54 straight home wins against non-conference teams from North Carolina.
    2)  Duke will open the season without fans and media in Cameron Indoor Stadium due to COVID-19.
     3)  Duke's 94 points was the most by any ACC school in the opening game Wednesday.

Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
    •    Duke hit 57.6 percent from the field against Longwood, which was the highest field goal percentage in a season opener since the Blue Devils hit 58.8 percent against East Tennessee State on Nov. 23, 1991.
    •    Kara Lawson's playing career has her in elite company as she is one of only three NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches to play in a NCAA Final Four, win an Olympic Gold Medal and win a WNBA Championship (Lindsay Whalen of Minnesota and Cynthia Cooper-Dyke of Texas Southern).
    •    All five Duke starters reached double-digits in the scoring column in the season opener for the second straight season.
    •    Junior Onome Akinbode-James pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds, while scoring a career-high 15 points against Longwood.  It marked her third career double-double and she now has notched one double-double in each of her three seasons with the Blue Devils. Her 16 rebounds was tied for the ninth most in the nation through the season opener.
    •    Duke's 94 points in the season opener were the most in a season opener since 98 at Liberty in
the 2016-17 campaign.
    •    Sophomore Jada Claude came off the bench and played 28 minutes against Longwood and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, while scoring a career-high seven points.  She hit 3-of-5 field goals.

Career Highs for the Blue Devils...
A total of six different Blue Devils registered career highs Wednesday in the season opener, while those six student-athletes had a total of 20 career highs.
Jaida Patrick posted eight career highs (minutes, FGM, FGA, 3PFG made, rebounds, points, assists and steals), Onome Akinbode-James (FTM, FTA, rebounds, points), Jade Williams (assists), Miela Goodchild (FGA), Jada Claude (FGM, 3PFG attempts, rebounds, points) and Uchenna Nwoke (points, steals).

Patrick Goes Off in Season Opener...
After scoring a total of 33 points all of last season, Duke sophomore Jaida Patrick went off for a career-high 21 points in the opener against Longwood as she hit 9-of-13 field goals.
The 21 points in the season opener is tied for the 11th most by a Blue Devil in the first game of a season.  She is one of only six freshmen or sophomores to do it as well.
Patrick totaled a career high seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, a career-high 9-of-13 field goals and drained her first two collegiate three-pointers.

Freshman Impressive in Debut...
Duke rookie Vanessa de Jesus was impressive in her Blue Devil debut with 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and one blocked shot in 31 minutes.
She became the first Duke freshman to start at guard in their first game since Mikayla Boykin in 2017.  Her 13 points were the most by a freshman that started their first game since Rebecca Greenwell had 17 in 2014 at Alabama.
Overall, de Jesus is the 30th Duke freshman to start her first collegiate game.

Ezeh to Miss Second Straight Season...
Duke sophomore forward Jennifer Ezeh will be sidelined for a second consecutive year after suffering another knee injury during practice on Nov. 21.
Ezeh tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee in practice.  When she arrived at Duke in  August of 2019, she had an ACL injury in her left knee and missed the 2019-20 campaign.
A Top-100 recruits coming out of high school, Ezeh, a native of Nibo, Nigeria, has yet to play a game for the Blue Devils. She earned All-America honors during her prep career at New Hope Academy in Maryland.

Lack of Scoring Returns...
Duke returns only 37.7 percent of its scoring from a year ago, which is the fewest amount of scoring to return for a Blue Devil squad in school history.
The previous low scoring to return was 43.0 in 1977-78 and 45 in 1976-77.
In comparing ACC schools for the 2020-21 campaign, Duke features the third-lowest amount of returning scoring in the league.

Fewest Points Returning
20.68 - Virginia
32.88 - North Carolina
37.65 - Duke
37.66 - Florida State
45.56 - Louisville

One of Top Three-Point Shooters Returns...
Miela Goodchild enters her third season with the Blue Devils and has drained 116 three-pointers in 60 collegiate contests.
Her 116 three-pointers in first two years ranks as the third-most by a Blue Devil over their freshman and sophomore seasons -- Rebecca Greenwell (145) and  Abby Waner (118).  Overall, she is fifth at Duke  over a span of two seasons -- Greenwell, Lexie Brown (142), Nicole Erickson (122), Waner and Goodchild (116).
Over her two seasons, Goodchild has started 35-of-60 games and averaged 9.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
She was the quickest Blue Devil to reach 100 three-pointers in only 45 contests and set a Duke freshman record with 73 three-pointers as a rookie.
